El Rancho
Originally a motel, Hull had planned to open a casino as an add-on to his hotel, but his local business leaders convinced him to build a casino instead. Rather than trying to attract gamblers, Hull’s goal was to create a resort that would offer a relaxing vacation experience to its guests. This concept was a radical departure from the usual gambling halls and casinos downtown.
Flamingo
The Flamingo Hotel is the first hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. It opened in 1946 and features a 77,000 square foot casino and 3,526 hotel rooms. It is also home to a wildlife habitat. It was built in the South Beach Miami style and was the first hotel in the country to abandon the dude ranch aesthetic. Currently, the Flamingo is the oldest casino in Las Vegas.
El Cortez
The El Cortez is a landmark hotel in downtown Las Vegas. Founded in 1952, it opened with a swanky neon sign, marquee, and arrow. Since then, the El Cortez has undergone multiple renovations, while maintaining its classic facade. In the 1960s, Jackie Gaughan purchased the El Cortez from the Houssels for $4 million. Gaughan owned the hotel for five decades and lived in it until his death in 2014.
Sahara
Located north of the Strip, the Sahara offers a view of the Las Vegas Strip. However, it is farther north than many of the other Strip hotels. Rooms face either the north or the south. The ambiance is nautical, and the pool area is an inviting place to lounge after a long day of gambling. This classic Las Vegas hotel has three towers and plenty of room and suite options.
Golden Gate
The Golden Gate Hotel is the oldest of all Las Vegas hotels. Originally built in 1906, the hotel opened with just ten rooms. As the city grew, it continued to develop, and even saw a brief resurgence during the Prohibition period. Its long history has helped it survive and adapt to the changes in the city, and it is recognized as the oldest hotel in Las Vegas.
Sands
The Sands Hotel opened in May of 1931 and has a long and colorful history. This casino first brought the Rat Pack and Frank Sinatra to Las Vegas before they made it big. The hotel’s famous pool room has since hosted legendary musicians such as Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the Eagles. Many of the famous people who have visited the Strip have also stayed at the Sands.
